Black History lI The story of Anarcha Westcott

During Black History Month (February 1 - March 1), we commemorate the remarkable story of Anarcha Westcott (1828-
1869), an enslaved 17-year-old girl who underwent approximately 30 surgical procedures without anesthesia to treat a vesicovaginal fistula. Her successful recovery from these surgeries is a testament to her remarkable courage and resilience. Although James Marion Sims, a racist person who performed the operations, is often credited as the father of gynecology, many acknowledge Anarcha Westcott as the true pioneer in this field, whose bravery and determination serve as an inspiration.

Black history is an integral part of America's history, and sharing stories like Anarcha's is essential, regardless of the difficulty.
